My Rig

Gamers, shit your pants, cause I’m runnin’ on a garbage heap.  Okay, it’s not that bad.

Purchased back in 2008, it’s served me well, but it’s no longer the godsend it once was.  AKA: It won’t run Skyrim or Fallout 3.  Let’s get on with the specs.

  • Acer Extensa 4420-5963
  • OS: Windows XP (upgraded by downgrading from the stock Vista ;3 )
  • 2GB RAM
  • AMD Athlon64 Dual Core: 1.9Ghz =(
  • ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 (integrated ftw! ><) Running with Radeon Omega drivers  V4.8.442.

In all reality, the only thing that matters is my OS and my graphics drivers, because the rest is all stock.  My advice is don’t downgrade an Acer.  It took me a whole week to get all my drivers, except the Broadcom (wifi) driver, which took longer and found it by accident.  Morrowind runs awesome, Oblivion stutters often in the Tamriel cell (esp. during combat), Fallout 3 runs like a turd.  Sims 2 used to do well, but due to overheating (presumably because I have so much stuff) it draws the pixels all wonky. Uninstalled.  =(

In intend to build a new PC, a desktop, by around Christmas this year (2011).  I’ve been told I can get what I want for around $300, but I’m skeptical.  In any case, we’ll see!

  1. I hope your new PC rig works out and that it eats games alive for many years to come. (=

I’ve always wanted to build an all-out gaming machine, games like Skyrim deserve a little PC pampering. I won’t be able to fully commit to that until next year though, so for now I’m seeing Skyrim through Xbox glasses.

    • Thanks, but it doesn’t look like it’s happening any time soon. Funds have that funny way of making themselves scarce when you’re in college. The 360 will have to do for now for my Skyrim-ing, too, and that’s fine, because my laptop can still serve other purposes (like Oblivion and Morrowind and, oh yeah, doing work). I feel like I don’t explore areas as much on a console, though; everything just kind of whooshes by. Playing on PC will be like playing it for the first time.

      • That’s the silver lining I’m counting on; with all the mods and expansions that could be available by the time I play Skyrim on a PC, it really will be like experiencing the game anew. My only concern is having enough time to enjoy it all. Skyrim is incredibly deep as it is, but with extra content from Bethesda, and their enthusiastic mod community, Skyrim will become an even greater time sink. I’ve always wanted to try my hand at modding textures, so that ‘hobby within a hobby’ will add to my time spent the on game.

  2. I feel your Pain. i have the same computer as you and am having the same problems with playing skyrim. i finally got the game to work on the computer
but it crawled. so im at a loss. i think it might be cheaper to just buy a x-box and then the game for what its worth.
